Our Story
The History of the Matlacha Hookers: Making Waves in the Community Since 1998

In 1998, a small group of 21 spirited women came together with a shared vision: to make a meaningful difference in their community. Thus, the Matlacha Hookers, a beloved and unique philanthropic organization with an equally unique name, was born. From humble beginnings, this group has grown into a powerful force for good, leaving an indelible mark on Matlacha and beyond.

A Creative Name with a Purpose

The story behind the name is as colorful as the organization itself. Nancy Goodwin, the first "Madame" (president) of the group, drew inspiration from her husband, Dana, who frequently wore a fishing hook on his hat. Living in the heart of a commercial fishing town, the hook symbolized community, hard work, and resilience—perfect for a fundraising organization. Thus, the Matlacha Hookers were officially established, complete with a meeting spot at the iconic Bert’s Bar.
Back then, the group was a local bunch of spirited women, described as "rough and tumble," who loved to meet monthly, share drinks, and brainstorm fundraising ideas. While their gatherings may have been casual, their commitment to giving back was anything but.

The First Fundraisers

The Hookers wasted no time diving into action. Their very first fundraiser was a car wash—a simple yet effective way to rally the community. Soon after, they launched the now-legendary Pine Island Elementary Fishing Tournament Derby, originally created to support the school’s accelerated reader program. This event has since become a cherished annual tradition, drawing families and anglers from across the region.

A Commitment to Education

Education quickly became the cornerstone of the Matlacha Hookers' mission. For years, they focused on funding programs for local schools. As the organization grew, so did its impact. Scholarships became a significant part of their work, opening doors for anyone seeking higher education. Over time, these scholarships evolved to reflect diverse priorities, such as community service, environmental stewardship, and scientific pursuits.
Each scholarship carries a personal touch—many are named in honor of individuals or tailored to specific fields of study. This ensures that every recipient not only receives financial support but also feels a deep connection to the community that invested in their future.

Growing and Thriving
Over the past 25 years, the Matlacha Hookers have welcomed more than 1,200 members into their fold. From their modest beginnings, this exponential growth underscores the widespread appeal of their mission and the dedication of the women who lead it. The organization has become a powerhouse of change, recognized by esteemed institutions like the State of Florida, the Lee County Foundation for Public Schools, the Sheriff’s Department, FEMA, the American Red Cross, and the Fire Department.

Evolution and Legacy

While the Matlacha Hookers have evolved from their early days, their core values remain steadfast. Their gatherings are now more structured, their events more impactful, and their reach more significant than ever. Yet, the spirit of camaraderie and determination that fueled their inception continues to guide them.
From car washes to scholarships, from local recognition to widespread impact, the Matlacha Hookers have proven that a small group of determined individuals can change the world—starting with their own community. As they celebrate 26 years of service, they look ahead with the same passion and purpose that began their journey.
Here’s to the Matlacha Hookers, a group that hooks hearts, changes lives, and continues to inspire all who cross their path.

We believe in the potential of all individuals to make a difference in their communities, to create positive change, and help build a stronger, more vibrant community for everyone.
